I'm contemplating upgrading my rear deck and door speakers. I won't be changing my stock HU come hell or high water, just the speakers (maybe). Has anyone else upgraded their speakers, and if so what did you put in and what's your assessment?

Thanks :D

Efficient isnt what u'd be looking for
Commonly, u need to match as close as possible the RMS wattage going to the speakers to the RMS handling of the speakers
Since the stock headunit outputs less than 20W per speaker, you should buy low RMS wattage speakers, or u'll be greatly underpowering the speakers and may damage them.
This is why people buys amps, one b/c stock HU's dont provide ample power for aftermarket speakers, and two b/c aftermarket speakers start around 50Wrms.....

*Sigh*. Some members here speak glowingly of the stock system in the current Accord V6--I like the HU's functionality, but the speakers suck and I get the feeling the HU does not put out as much wattage as my 2001 Accord V6's HU did.

I may need to bite the bullet and add an amp, then...*Sigh* again.

Duck, don't let people discourage you about staying stock. Sure you won't get the same sound quality from your stock system as from one that is well amplified, but there are aftermarket speakers out there that will improve the sound of your stock system without an amp. You might lose a little SPL though.

I think that Crystal Mobile sound have a decent set of cheap coaxial speakers that could possibly drop right into your stock system.

I also just started to look around and I am leaning on the JL VR690-cxi or the Alpine Type S SPS-460a. But yes becuase the stock head unit only offers a low RMS you have to get speakers that fit with in that realm. I have spoke and read up a lot about this and I have read that most people say not to spend over 100.00 if using the stock deck becuase you wont get that much improvement over the stock ones. If you want you could power them but that a diffrent topic.

I am not opposed to adding an amp to drive a good set of speakers, but I do not want to add more clutter to passenger cabin or trunk (I like a clean, stock look). So I guess I will begin consulting with local shops in regards to what they can offer me as far as hiding an amp set up in my ride.

I am also a bit opposed to having to upgrade a sound system in a vehicle I just dropped $27K on less than two months ago...In a just world, the sound system should be booming for that price! (I know, nothing in life is fair).

I did go out and take a look at the rear speakers in my Accord last night. Eeesh. Paper cone, no seperate component for the tweeter, itty-bitty magnet. No wonder my ears are complaining.

I'm thinking I'll stay Alpine, though. They've always been good to me...But the Infinitys look beauteous, kinda tempting.

I did contact JL about a stealth box and so far they are not going to make one which sucks imo. But I am in the same boat becuase I bought mine the same time as you did and for the amount we spent Id expect more. I have heard they got better in this gen then previous gen setups. Please share what you do and how it sounds so I have something to base it my opinion off of

Alpines?

I have a 7th gen 6spd coupe. The Alpine Type S line seem to be in my price range. I'm thinking of just upgrading the front speakers but *not* the headunit. And maybe the rears as well if I can get a good deal.

I just have a few questions:

If I go with the Type S will I have to get an amp? I know it will sound better with an amp, but I can't really afford it.

What models will fit? I think the fronts are 6.5" and the rears are 6x9. Does that mean the SPS-690A and SPS-170A are the models I want?

Does this sound like a good upgrade or will I not notice any improvement over the stock speakers?

Thanks!

L_fty seems to endorse Type S's above... :D

Circuitcity.com and crutchfield.com both have "What fits my car" selectors, try those out. Circuit City actually says more stuff fits our Accords than Crutchfield, though. I always double check the 03 and 04 Accords on both sites for fitment to make sure they both agree.

I'm leaning toward Type S's myself, we'll see. I'm fighting with the idea of whether or not to buy an amp. However, if you look at your stock speakers, you'll be compelled to upgrade ASAP.
