I understand the FSM calls for oil changes ever 7.5k and oil filters ever 15k. I dont abuse my car often (except for that silly V6 tiburon i smoked today hehe) and i drive about 40 highway miles a day. Would i be safe using these factory intervals? I use Mobil1 fully synthetic 5w-20($27) and a Bosch DistancePlus oil filter($12).
you're good :)

Im new on V6 Performance.net. I have a 2004 AV6 Auto. Im not sure if I did hit the RPM limiter, but I remember that a couple of months after I bought it in 2006 I went from "D" to "D3" and floor it to pass a car, when I came back to D, the engine light was on also the TCS (I was scare to death!!!!)... a couple of days later they turn off by theirself. Until today there is nothing wrong with the powertrain.

I dont plan on abusing this car at all
About 4 trips to the drag strip, a whole season of autocross, and too many street races to count. Whelp so much for that statement LOL

I have an 07 6 6 speed and i love it car runs like a champ 58000 miles and counting
ps about the oil is is normal to burn like a quart of oil during oil changes
That's unusual for a Honda (most of them anyway) to use much oil at all between oil changes. Went 10k once on mine (synthetic) and not only was the oil level still on the full line, the color was still amber. Normally don't go that long though, 7500 is more typical.

that seems like a bit high consumption for a car with that few miles... whats ur oil change interval?
Weird... i flog mine all the time and do frequent autocross events, doesnt burn at all!

Maybe your ride needs an Italian Tune-up.

If you race your car and still have pre-cats. Be prepared for oil consumption, due to toasted piston rings because of excessive unburnt fuel, and excessive heat in the cylinder heads.
When should i prepare for this? I mean, i dont hit the limiter often. And im not using a two-step (obviously), i cant imagine the A/F is so rich at WOT that a 1600F converter cant burn off. pbooks Accord has 195k, doesnt burn oil, and still has pre-cats. He road raced his frequently... Have your piston rings went bad from racing with precats?

In theory, of course your correct. But in a newer car with precise fuel injection and modern catalytic converters i think the effect could be pretty negligible. Unless of course, the car is a designated race car and not a DD.

I've seen alot of street j series have high oil consumption and a destroyed pre cat right before it..
So a busted/broken/clogged catalytic converter would cause this. A properly functioning one would be fine. Correct?

Kiet wrote this in another thread 18 months ago; doesn't directly answer your question, but maybe saves him from retyping some stuff. :p

high flow or not, it's too close to the cylinder heads thus holds heat which results to lack of power, efficiency, and also can result in pre-mature engine failure. You are better off with Pre-cat deletes(test pipe)
I've seen stock pre-cats blow out on stock cars.

NO engine will run good with a restriction design like that. That's why alot of these engines have oil consumption issues at over 100k, etc. Holding too much heat in the cylinder heads = castastrophic failure. Historically, Honda engines lasted over 200k easily. These added emissions component really put a damper in that life span.

Evidence? You bet I do. I work on more J-series engines than you think. You ask any mechanic, the logics of an engine and how they work efficiently. The cats are fine, but the design is poorly thought out putting it so close to the cylinder heads. Contact HOA, and ask them how many failed Cat's they have warrantied under 5yr/100k, also ask them how many oil consumption issues they've had with these newer designed engines versus the ones in the past. I tear these engines down on a weekly basis and I do factory maintenance for alot of people in so cal.

....

I can't even count how many failed stock pre cat's I've encountered, and those parts aren't cheap. After the the pre-cats fail, guess what, oil consumption is a common thing that occurs after the fact... I've seen it with my own eyes, on numerous cars.
HTH.

Precats are more likely to fail, and unfortunately the stock ones have ceramic substrate which shatters and can suck into the front bank. It's happened around here a few times.

But when they're working properly and the A/F is correct, they don't affect oil consumption in my experience.

Very good research. I see nighthawks point now. Good thing my next mod will be PCDs!

On a side note. I have to have at least 1 catalytic converter for my Autocross class (STX). I plan on getting PCDs, but ill still have the stock jpipe and 3rd catalytic converter. Thoughts on that?

Thanks.

3rd cat is fine to me (i prefer it for a street car). I have an XLR8 HFC down there with ceramic coated PCDs up front. Not sure about now, but when Kiet wrote that he had a cat too... where it's supposed to be--AWAY from the fucking HEADS.
