Fuel Problem?

 I went out to start my car this morning, it turned over, sputtered, shook, and stalled. At this point I have 1/4 tank of gas. I got out checked all the vac lines, electrical connections and everything seemed fine. I tried starting it for the next 1/2 hour and it just sputtered and stalled. I walked to the gas station (1/4) mile away, and got a couple of gallons of gas, put it in, and the damn thing started fine after a couple of attempts. I drove it to the gas station and filled it up immediately after, only took 11 gallons. 11+2=13 which means I had about 4 gallons in there initially. Any ideas as to what happened here, because I don't want to get stuck somewhere.

ps: sorry for the long post

Perhaps the fuel pickup in the gas tank got clogged, and when you put more fuel in it stirred crap around and opened the pickup back up?

I was leaning towards that. Had a similar thing happen on a brand new Blazer. Dealer checked the trouble code and said it was a clogged injector.
Is there a serviceable fuel filter in my car?

Had this same problem with my car. It was so bad that my car wouldn't start for a whole day at a time :( .

It's either water (which can't turnover an engine) or junk inside the tank clogging up the pump.

I used STP fuel cleaner (one in red bottle) and has solved my problems with my car :) . You have to use the one that is made for tanks up to 21 gallons since the smaller one only works for tanks up to 14 gallons. It also should be used every full tank of gas for a few times to make sure it doesn't happen again.
