Max 130mph?? Computer controlled?

I just bought an 03 Accord 4dr v6, and heard that it maxes out at 130mph. I haven't had it beyond 100 yet. Is this true? The speedo goes to 160, what's the deal?

Thanks...I'm a newbie at this too, so I'm just learnin' things.

Welcome

Yes it is computer limited to 130 MPH. Though if you go that far on the speedo, it will read like 135 MPH since it's off. I have done 143 MPH in my car but sinc ours is around 10 MPH so I was really doing 133ish MPH.

The Accord was never meant to go that fast (suspension wise). Though some have calculated 148 MPH for the 7th gen AV6. But the cars suspension is not even made for it so thus the limiter.

You can get it removed somehow but so far know one has done it.

Suspension? I don't think so. The tire speed rating is the only thing that puts a cap on the speed. If Honda were to put Z-rated tires on the cars, they really wouldn't have to put a governor on them. But the car will never see 160, governor or not. Not unless you can find a bunch of horsepower someplace.

and even if you get a way to get the car higher, the time it takes to get from 120 to 140+ is a LONG time.... I mean WOH... Yea its still faster then some cars but its SLOW ones you get that fast... But then again what do you want, its only an accord... :)

Anyway the speed limiter is because the government gives discounts on tax's and what not... Think of it this way, why would an economy car even need to go 100 MPH? I mean come on you have no reson to go that fast... Be lucky we get to 130, and yes I hear 143mpg is our top speed but car is limited, again why do you need to go faster then 130mph? Yes I would like the limit removed but I really have no need, even racing peeps you dont go over 100 very often.... and if so you dont need to be on a public road because of the danger...

I thought that the speed rating was just a safety thing, meaning"not safe over such and such a speed." but I don't really know.

I heard it's usually aerodynamics that limits a car's topspeed. for instance: I read that there were a few instances of audi TT coupes taking flight on the autobahn right after they came out. that's why the lip spoiler became a standard accessory, because it reduced the lift the car's round body created at high speeds.

using physics theres a point where the force of accleration and and the force of wind resistance become equal and the car will then travel at constant velocity (whatever our max speed is). so yeah youre right...its basically aerodynamics that limit a cars ACTUAL top speed. this is computer controlled for factors as people suggested such as tax incentives and tires that arent meant to handle those speeds.

anyway, i know the coupe has a really low aerodynamic factor of 0.29. this allows it to go longer until the forces actually balance and cancel each other out.

No, I don't believe so. A car manufacturer can't assume the liability of having a vehicle that can go faster than the factory installed tires are rated for. For example, the Accord has H rated tires (H=130 mph rating), so they limit the car's top speed to 130. Any car that comes with H rated tires will be limited to 130 mph max.... some manufacturers will limit the top speed to less than it's tires are rated... for example, the new Mazda 6s is electronically limited to a 120 mph top speed even though it comes with H rated tires.

 That would be amazing. That's hard to believe.... do you remember where you saw that?

I don't. I think it might have been a side-bar in an old road&track(prolly 3-4 years ago) but I remember that after i read it I never saw another TT without the lip spoiler. plus I think they retrofitted all of the ones sold without it as they came in for service.

but just take a look at the profile of the car next time you see one. it is perfectly flat on the bottom and the top is like two perfect domes. this would create a low pressure area over the top and with enough speed this lift (along with a rising hill) would overcome the gravitational weight of the car.

I also read that the new VW beetle produces positive lift at ~135 mph (luckily even the turbo won't reach that speed). the autobahn is an amazing thing isn't it?

ps-speaking of which, I saw a picture of a mclaren f1 that a german auto executive lost control of at an estimated speed of ~210mph (based on the skid marks). luckily they slowed down enough before flying off the road, that he and his passenger both walked away. but you can't say enough about the crash worthiness of that crushable carbon fiber:

They put H rated tires on the 7th gen  . I have V rated tires on my car which are the OEM Michelins. Ok I had no idea that was the reason for the limiter. You other points also make it valid but trust me the suspension is not made for it as well (to high and to soft).

You learn something new every day :) .

the 4 cyl tops out at 130
the v6 6 speed tops out at 151...

the 6 speeds are geared to do over 180.. with about 400 hp that could easily be done(with other saftey upgrades)

my father has a c32 and tops out at 200.. it's a v6 supercharged with ReNNtech pullies and ecu upgrade..

Where do I find the speed rating of my tires? The closest thing I can find is a large "91V" following the "P205/60R16". The car is a '03 sedan so it should have "H" rated tires, but I don't see any "H" anywhere on the tire. Am I looking in the right place?

Mine was (not using them no more) also V rated, good to 150mph:eek:. but anyway, 130mph, 150mph, I don't think I will drive anywhere close to those speed anytime soon.

removing the speed governor is quite simple update the ECU code to remove it or buy a hondata system or similar chip...
So I'm sure you can just stroll on down to the Honda dealership and have them flash your ECU with the limiter removed, right?

And Hondata will not even touch the V-6 engines. Only 4-cylinder.

well since there is no demand for Hondata to mess with a V6 I guess you are out of luck..... I am sure that someone somewhere will come up with a solution......

Can anyone verify this? I've looked around, and have found no straight answer as to the 6 speed's maximum speed. Has anyone actually gotten a 2003 6 speed to 150 or anywhere close to that? any imput would be appreciated. Thanks
Dude your not thinking, hehe

How can anyone have their car that fast if its electronicly limited? DOH

Their is no way to remove the limit right now untill some new programer comes out, other wise the fastest you can go is 130 MPH regardless what the spedo says...

Your speedo may have read 135 mph, but I think your actual speed was probably 130 mph, due to the electronic limiter.
well i think its bs since the car is electronically limited, i dont think the car actually knows the exact speed it is travelling at...it just uses the speedometer to know. for example, if he is at 130 and tries to go to 131, the governer will kick in.

plus he has a 2% tint...thats link painting your windows black. even limos dont go that dark.

Daymn, I know what you mean by suspension...

On stock everything.... MAN IT EATS MAD DONKEY DIC*!!!

Aproaching 100, the car feels like a feather and I feel like I'm going to go flying across the freeway if I hit a lil bump.

Fastest I ever took it was to 120 cos I was too skerd to W0T it and go faster and loose control. (I was just about at W0T anyways).

Here's a picture I found on the 6th gen...
