Navigation Problem on startup

I recently had a little work done to my 04 Accord Coupe at a Honda dealer. They had to disconnect the battery to do it. When they were done, the tech took it upon himself to pull out the Nav system to find the serial number and get the radio code for me. Not only did he give me the wrong code anyway (another story), but now everytime I start my car the Nav has no idea where I am. It starts me somewhere in the western time zone and I live in the eastern. The time is 3 hours early for about a minute and then finally the map and the time realize they are not in the west and correct themselves. If I try to get directions before they correct themselves, I wind up with horribly wrong directions. This never used to happen. Whenever I started my car, it would know exactly where I was.
Does anyone know what is going on here or what I can do to fix this? Any help is much appreciated!

Well they should have pulled the serial number off of the navigation unit in the trunk, and then typed it in on the IN to get your code. Also when you first put in you navi theft code, did the dealer or you let the vehicle sit outside in park with the engine running and in the clear from buildings, trees, etc. for the GPS to acquire a signal, and then wait for this screen to go away? I dont see anything on the IN that fits what you have described, may be a GPS positioning error. I would first disconnect the battery for 30 seconds and try initializing the navi again. If you need any codes i can get them for you.

I just went out to the diagnosics screen. Everything is green. The NAV works fine, it just doesn't boot up in the right location. As far as entering the NAV code is concerned, the dealer must have done that. I just needed to enter the radio code. I just went out to the car and unplugged the battery for 30 seconds. The NAV did the same thing as usual and didn't even ask me for a code. I only needed to enter the radio code again. Is there something I need to do ti get it to prompt me for the NAV code?

There are two ways to access the diag screen through jumping the SCS connector in the trunk and or holding down the menu, map/guide, cancel buttons for about 5 seconds, the diag screen will show everything green which means every component is working, if one is red there is a problem with that component.

I unhooked the battery again and this time for like 20 minutes and the NAV asked me for the code when I hooked it back up. So I put in the code and it said aquiring signal this may take up to 10 minutes, leave engine running stay clear of trees and buildings. Then it found the signal and this did not fix the problem. So I tried it again, but this time it was unable to locate the GPS signal and it said to reposition the car. So I'm thinkin I am getting a crappy signal where I am parked probably because of the cloud cover. I am going to try this again tomorrow under (hopefully) clear skies in a different location. If this doesn't work, do you or anyone else have any other suggestions? Thanks!

well since the dealer messed it up, worse comes worse, you could always try taking it back to them and have them try and fix it.
did the tech pull any wires out when he took out the nav unit? besides, the battery of course
That's what I was wondering. I assume he isn't that incompetent to pull the wires out and not put them back the way they were, but it's a possibility. It would be odd if there was a wire that wasn't plugged in that was repsonsible for this type of problem though. It's like the car just doesn't remember where it was last parked. It resets everytime to somewhere near Long Beach, CA then corrects itself after about 30-60 seconds. It remembers all of my personal addresses and settings though...

My car does this sporadically, I'm planning on repositioning my GPS antenna to inside my spoiler. I have tints which maybe a factor. Sometime it does it other time is shows me in the middle of the ocean. This usually happens on cloudy days. So I'm hoping reposition the antenna outside will help. Do you have tints in your car?

I say you take it back and have them fix it the right way... and they could of used your vin# to pull to radio/navi code if the car was bought at that dealer.

and if you dont want to go back unplug the battery for about 5 min but before that park in an open parking lot so your car gets the best signal... let it do its thing after you inter the navi code and your done. I have done this i couple of times and it works.

I parked my car in an open area and before I unhooked my battery I checked the number of satellites. I had 6. From when I've looked before 6 is about average for me. That still didn't fix the problem. I've done this about 5 times and always the same result. My antenna is on the roof of the car and my windows are not tinted.
It's funny, when I first turn it on, the clock is correct. Then when the HONDA NAVIGATION (with the picture of the earth) screen goes away and the warning screen comes up, the clock goes back 3 hours. Then, after about 30 seconds the map and clock correct themselves. It's so weird. I can try to find a spot with more SATs and unhook the battery there again, but this really doesn't seem to have an impact. I may have to take it back to the dealer, but I just have a feeling they won't even know what's going on.

I Just read about setting up the navigation unit a few days ago it is a two step process. They say you may need to do this if the battery has been disconnected for a while. The first step is what you have been doing letting the GPS find itself in that 10 minutes but then there is another step the requires driving your car. I will repost went I get home and give you exactly what the Accord Maintenance Manual Says.

Ok I have read the manual for when the battery is disconnected. The best thing to do is to disconect the battery again for as long as it takes to get the screen that says ***Wait*** the system is acquiring its GPS signal...... Then once that as initialized and gone to the disclaimer screen that part is done. Then you should do a map matching DO NOT enter a destination during any of this. Make sure you are on the map screen and then drive your car on a mapped road. Then once the name of the street appears on the bottom of the screen the map has been matched. See if this works or maybe you have already done this and just didn't realize it. But it needs to be done all at once. If you have any problems just let me know i will dig deaper.

So let me make sure I have this right. I need to allow the map to initialize like I have been. From what I am understanding from your post, I need to then drive the car on a mapped road BEFORE I shut the car off? So this all needs to be done while the car is running and without turning it off in between the steps? Do I understand this correctly? I have not tried this solution yet. I will try this when I get home from work later today. Thanks for your help.

Ok. I did exactly what you said and it still did not work. I got the signal, then started driving on a mapped road. Then it said the name of the road at the bottom of the map. I drove a few miles further and then turned the car off and back on to see the results. Immediately following the initial earth screen, the clock went back 3 hours and the map was incorrect. What am I doing wrong here? I must be missing something, this shouldn't be this hard...

There is no setting for the time zone. Unless its in the diagnostic screen, and deals with offset. The time can also be changed manually but it seems that it is a deeper problem, which maybe your DVD in the trunk. Once you have at least one GPS satellite the time should automatically fix itself. The fact that its on the west coast can mean one of 2 things, either the connection to the ECU is off which is an option, or the second which is DVD player.

Also the GPS antenna isn't on your roof, it's on the back rear deck of the coupe between the 2 speakers, so if you have a tissue box or teddy bear blocking it, that might be an issue. The antenna on the roof is for XM SAT radio.

Thanks for the info. How do I check the connection to the ECU? I'm not even sure what the ECU is. Should it be off or on? What can I check or do to the DVD player to see if that is the problem?

This problem never happened before my battery was unhooked. So it seems like its a setting that was reset or a configuration issue. But I am pretty certain I am initializing the GPS correctly.

What sux is Honda's way of checking the DVD player and the GPS antenna is to try a different DVD player and GPS antenna. Sounds like a simple solution for them, but not for the daily drivers out there that don't have an extra $1400 dvd player and $120 GPS antenna lying around as a spare. I would say your best bet is to bring it to Honda so they can diagnose it.
