Valve adjustment and spark plugs

OK, first I was reading up in the service manual about adjusting the valves (J30A4) on my 03 V6, and the Helm manual says to disconnect the Idle air control valve (IAC). Problem is, the exploded view in the manual shows nothing about an IAC valve, and I don't see one on the engine. I obviously can't disconnect something that's not there, but I'm wondering what's the deal here? Is the manual full of it, or am I blind?

While I have your attention, I've noticed a few threads about spark plugs coming loose from the heads on these engines, destroying the threads in the head, and causing some other damages. I don't remember any plugs being loose, when I changed them, but looking at the old plugs today, I noticed two of them were dirty, on the threads, and a little on the porcelain, so I suspect these plugs were starting to become loose. I was wondering if Honda has issued a TSB or something about this situation, and ways to prevent it? Thanks for any insight you may have on this.

I don't think there is an IAC valve on the V6s. I think the DBW throttle body takes care of everything.

Loose spark plugs are a problem with the long service interval (7 years/105K miles); you should really be checking the torque on them every couple years. I just checked mine and luckily they were all at the proper torque after 5 years & 100K miles.

I will check the torque on the plugs when I do the valves, even if I don't remove them. I was hoping there was a TSB or something on the subject though (wishful thinking). I assume there has to be a valve that controls the idle air, but maybe it's part of the throttlebody?????????

No offense intended, but are you sure you're not misreading it? I say that because I can't find any reference in my Helms to the IAC related to the valve adjustment, manifold removal, or valve cover removal. Could it be the IAT? Maybe I'm the one that's blind. What page are you referring to?

OK, these are the two pages. The first pic is of page 9-3. On the right side, number 3, second on the list, it says "Idle air control (IAC) valve connector". The second pic is of page 9-2. The exploded view shows nothing about the IAC valve. Both pages are from the Helm 03-05 V6 supplement.

That's what I figured. There is no mention of an IAC valve anywhere else in the service manual. So now I wonder what controls the idle air? Maybe there is a valve, but there is no connector because the wiring goes through the DBW.

Basic idea: Disconnect everything from the TB and IM, since you're removing the TB and IM.....

Use the blue loctite on the spark plugs if you're concerned about them loosening. I wouldn't worry about it personally and would assume that anything you've heard about plugs coming loose is due to improper assembly torque (dirt in threads, no or inaccurate torque wrench, etc).
