I know this is a pretty broad question but my parents are thinking about moving to florida as part of their retirement plan. They've been asking me wheres the best place to live that has the best mix between urban/suburban living. I've been told that Miami/Ft. Lauderdale are pretty nice places to live but I felt like I should ask you guys where you think would be the best place for a 50-60yr old Asian coupe to retire. Of course they're hoping for some nice sun and sand but they also want a good collection of "asian" orientated stores. Any ideas? Btw we haven't been to florida yet but we are planning on going next week to meet some realtors. just not sure where to go yet in fl

i live in orlando.. and i used to live in garden groove and grew up around asian stores and asian food..u are not goin to find much asian over her as i barely even see Asian people but downtown Orlando has some asian stores...

i have been to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale and Orlando seems more better for me and safer or that's my opinion. my cousin goes school in ft lauderdale and he dosnt recommend me to move down there ether.. i havent checked any other places so i have no idea..

but definately the amount of asian stores we have in LA, i doubt u will even find half of them here..

are you serious? its that bad?! my parents had the impression that it would be a great place to live....yeah the thing is is that my family is pretty asian and we grew up around a really asian community so I'm not sure if they would be able to deal with the lack of asian...well if anything i'll go check out orlando instead of ft. lauderdale. which place orlando / miami / ft lauderdale has nicer houses though? my parents are hoping to find the nicest place for the best price in the nicest neighborhood.

every single place will has its good places and bad places.. orlando has some beautiful communities but also has its ghetto side. also they have asian store not many but at least they do u know what i am sayin. i am not sure if miami and other places has asian stores or not.

i moved to the fort lauderdale area this year after living in honolulu for several years...i was in l.a. before that where there are large asian communities too. if you've been to honolulu you'll know that literally every other person and business is asian. here in florida, i'd be lucky to see one asian person out of thousands (hahaha aside from my wife who is Filipino). and there might be one asian grocery store in all of south florida. it's mostly comprised of haitians, cubans, jamaicans and south americans. there are decent subdivisions of fort lauderdale though such as plantation, sunrise, coral springs, weston etc. the only place where i have seen any hint of an asian community is delray beach, but it's very expensive. having been born and raised in SoCal and after living in Honolulu, Florida so far in my opinion is nothing to write home about. good luck!

...ouchh from the sound of it florida isn't sounding all that graet. my parents were interested cuz some of their friends mentioned the "investment potential" but it might not be worth it if they can't connect well with their environment...

damnnn...i was just talking with my parents and they're starting to question whether or not they even want to visit next week.. i told them that living in the bay area definitely taints the way you view the world and that not every place is the same. they sound a bit more hesitant especially when i told them about the lack of asians.

hey implayaz how come you moved from socal to Fl? i rarely ever hear ppl wanting to move out of cali??

cause of i wanted to buy a business(gas station) and in a place like cali they are ridiculous priced plus i had my mom's side of the family here..trust me the way my business is right now, i wish i never moved cause i had a damm good job...but never know.. i might even move back..depends on how the economy goes for next 6 months.

you should move back! there's nothing like cali.i actually plan to move down to socal within the next two years. it definitely spoils you. i can't imagine myself living anywhere else. my parents even admit that cali living is in many ways perfect.. but they still somehow want to try out florida...

its too bad i can't imagine myself living anywhere else. i know it's expensive but i can't even picture myself ditching the bay area anytime soon. maybe later on when i'm trying to start up a business will i begin to understand the deeper $$ issues

It's hard to adapt from the West Coast to the East Coast. I'm from the East Coast and I can not adapt to the West Coast.

yea.. i mean i could still live there and would be able to buy a small business but the $$$ is way too much for a small business... sad thing is i never realy looked which is the reason why i sometimes regret. if i did look for a business outside of orange county i would have found something. i guess when one lives in cali they get spoiled and they dont wanna move away from the place they live until they come to realize they have to for themselves as well as families sakes.

let me ask u this.. are they retired? and they are moving here why? just cause?.. if they are retired and cant afford than its a different story but if they can afford i say stay in cali.. sometimes its better to be happy with what u have than not and dream high like me of having big house for cheap and business for less and i dont have any.. that is the situation i am in.

Lake Mary

Its like 15 mins north of Orlando. I'm half Korean. There is a pretty broad amount of asian people there I guess. I know a bunch of people from vietnam, laos, korea, china, phillipines. There are a few churches and temples around that area also. I don't live there anymore, but I used to a couple years ago. I live like an hour north in Daytona now. Don't move here, Daytona blows

by looking at your username i'm going to assume that your family is korean. well let me tell you that there aren't many asian oriented shopping plazas down here in FL. however, there are many little stores spread through out. if they're wanting to come down to FL more for retirement purposes then FL is a nice place to come without a doubt. i dont know if your parents are looking for a waterfront home or not, but st. petersburg *which is where i'm at* has some really nice waterfront properties. if they just want to come down for the weather then i'd suggest checking out pensacola, tampa, jacksonville, orlando, and ft. lauderdale/miami. i would say that FL is populated mostly with vietnamese.
