There's a difference between a collision and liability claim when it comes to rocks and the insurance companies. If a rock falls off a truck and hits your car before it hits the ground, its a liability claim and the trucking company usually covers it or you only have to pay your liability deductible.

If the rock falls off the truck and hits the ground/roadway first, then its a collision claim, and generally not covered by their insurance and you have to pay your collision deductible.

^^^wish I knew that, Ive taken many rocks from trucks without it hitting ground first, which have chipped both my hood (large chip) and my windshield (also large chip). I didnt have the right of mind to find out the trucking co. and/or license number.

I came across this thread years too late, but if anyone still uses this forum I just want to say that diy kits like https://crackeraser.com/ are used for professional and home use. They stand by their products, so you don't have to worry about shady sale speeches. I've never used permatex,so I don't have anything to compare it to, but there are other resins on the market that won't damage your windshield.

SUMMARY: I followed all the instructions and this kit actually ruined my windshield to the point of me actually needing a new one now. The damage this kit caused is the long expanding crack has expanded halfway through my windshield now, 3 days later.

I will need a new windshield now. I have searched online and people say this thing doesn't work, but no one has complained of it actually destroying their windshield.

There is no disclaimer on the box or warning that this may break the windshield. I am going to call them tomorrow to see if they will stand by their product and help me in any way.

Does anyone have any advice?

I'm truly sorry to hear about the unexpected outcome you had with the windshield crack repair process. It's frustrating when a product doesn't meet expectations, especially causing more harm. While I can't speak to your specific situation, for future reference, it's crucial to choose reliable solutions. Some people have had success with products like the windshield crack repair kit from Crack Eraser (crackeraser.com), but I completely understand your hesitation after this experience. In cases like this, consulting with professionals or your insurance provider might be a more dependable route for windshield repair or replacement. Your feedback could also serve as valuable input to manufacturers, prompting them to improve their products.

Story...I bought my car with a rock chip in the top driver side of my windshield about 0.7 of an inch in diameter. Trying to fix things myself where I can, I was introduced to this "professional" windshield repair kit:

There were 2 at advanced auto parts, one was $6 this one was $11 so I bought this one. This turned out to be a big mistake.
I got to this step:

I followed instructions to the letter. After I put the resin in the tube that's on my windshield and put in the syringe, which I pulled up as shown (and instructed) and locked it in place, I sat in my car and looked up at the top of the windshield and here's what I saw:

It looks like my windshield couldn't handle the pressure that this syringe made and there was a crack formed about 6 inches long at the time I noticed it.
I immediately removed the syringe, but it was too late. (The instructions say hold the syringe in the position above for 10 Minutes.) I pulled it out within one minute. By the time I went upstairs to get my camera and take some pics, the crack expanded to 10 inches long. 3 days later now, the crack has expanded to half way through my windshield and bothers me while driving.

Here's what it looks like from the outside:
(before I used this product it was just the rock chip and now you can see it's a lot worse)

Hey! I get the DIY spirit. I had a similar situation with a rock chip, and I went for the Crack Eraser "do it yourself windshield repair kit" (crackeraser.com/collections/diy-windshield-repair-kits). It's not just for pros – it worked wonders on that chip, and now it's barely noticeable. Give it a shot; you might surprise yourself with the results! 😊
